As Andy Burnham becomes Prime Minister, IPM’s Ian Harvey writes in The Conversation about Manchesterism

As Andy Burnham takes office as Prime Minister, Ian Harvey, Head of the Institute of Place Management at Manchester Metropolitan University, has published a timely new article in The Conversation exploring Manchesterism and what it could mean for the future of place-based policy and governance in England.

Drawing on Greater Manchester’s experience of devolution, the article examines how long-term collaboration between local government, businesses, universities, the NHS, communities and other anchor institutions has helped shape one of the UK’s most recognised models of place-based leadership.

The article argues that Manchesterism is about far more than one political leader. Instead, it reflects decades of partnership working, strong local institutions and a commitment to tackling complex challenges through a place-based approach. It explores how integrating transport, housing, health, skills and economic development around the needs of people and communities could help shape the next phase of national policymaking.

The themes explored closely reflect IPM’s research and engagement on place management, partnership working, high streets, town centres and place governance. As the new Government begins to set its agenda, the article contributes to the growing national debate on how empowering places can support economic growth, improve public services and reduce inequality.
