New JPMD Paper Explores How Arts Can Strengthen Communities

Can the arts help communities reimagine their future?

A new paper by Francesca Leonardi and Paola Dubini published in the Journal of Place Management and Development explores how a film residency in the rural Italian town of Cassine helped strengthen community identity, build local relationships and encourage residents to think differently about the future of their place. Rather than focusing on the films themselves, the research demonstrates how creative collaboration, hospitality and community participation can become powerful tools for place-based innovation and sustainable development.

The findings offer valuable insights for place managers, policymakers and community leaders interested in creative placemaking, cultural development and community engagement, highlighting the importance of putting people and relationships at the heart of shaping places.
