Connecting students with practical, place-based projects through the IPM network has been a recurring theme in conversations with our members. In response, we’re working with the Manchester School of Architecture on MSA LIVE 27, inviting IPM members to propose live projects in England that they are involved in and that could benefit from students’ ideas.
MSA LIVE is the School’s annual programme connecting architecture students with external collaborators. If you work with a community, organisation or place-based initiative, you could bring a live challenge or opportunity to a student team.
Projects could focus on high streets, town centres, Pride in Place neighbourhoods, public spaces or community assets. They could explore how a place might change, how people could use a space differently, or how design and engagement could help address a local issue. The project focus and outputs will be agreed with the student group.
The opportunity brings architecture students into contact with the practical challenges facing places and the people and organisations working to shape them. Possible outputs include design proposals, models, drawings, prototypes, reports, websites, events, engagement toolkits and campaign materials.
Successful collaborators will meet their student team on 9 February 2027 and work with them towards final presentations on 21 May 2027. Collaborators should be able to take part in at least five discussions with students between February and May, including at least two during Action Week (17-20 May), provide feedback through a short survey and keep MSA staff informed of significant changes.
If you have an idea, please complete the Call for Projects form by 5pm on Friday 6 November 2026. If you’d like to discuss a project before applying, contact Emily Crompton at e.crompton@mmu.ac.uk.
