HSTF Case Study: Birmingham City Centre and the Colmore Business District

Colmore BID has seen an ever-growing night-time economy with the number of bars, clubs and restaurants growing considerably in the last few years. This growing economy has also led to challenges.  This case study particularly focuses on the issue of safety and crime and the projects undertaken to improve people’s experience of the city centre.

Colmore has been building engagement with local businesses and has created a place which attracts investment.  It became evident that any project which reduced anti-social behaviour would make these aims achievable. In doing so, it has helped to build trust among local businesses and has strengthened the position of the BID.

This case study, written by John-Jo Von Johnson demonstrates a variety of initiatives which have been undertaken to help improve safety and perception of the area.  In doing so, it demonstrates the effectiveness of BIDs and their ability to transform High Streets and Town Centres.

This provides an example of how BIDS can work to help places tackle local safety concerns and crime in high streets and town centres. This case study is an important read for those who are willing to engage in safety strategies in their local place.
