The event will explore how Turku and other places can apply these findings locally to support sustainable growth.
Located on the southwest coast of Finland, Turku is the country’s oldest city and was its first capital. Known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and commitment to sustainability, Turku has become a model for modern cities seeking to balance heritage with innovation. Professor Millington’s day in Turku will begin with a guided exploration of the city centre at 10:00 am, showcasing Turku’s efforts to blend historical preservation with contemporary urban needs. Following the tour, he will join representatives from Turun Sanomat, Turku’s leading local newspaper, for an interview. The main event at the Wauditorio starts at 13:30, where Professor Millington will deliver his keynote speech. The event concludes at 16:00, followed by a networking session at Walo Rooftop Bar, offering a panoramic view of Turku’s evolving skyline.
Steve’s presentation will highlight his extensive research spanning over 20 years on towns and high streets, emphasising the transformative role of partnerships in revitalising high streets into dynamic community hubs. Drawing on Manchester Metropolitan University’s academic expertise and the impactful work of the High Streets Task Force, he will share examples of places where this expertise has successfully shifted local perceptions and boosted footfall.
This marks the latest in a series of international engagements for Professor Millington, following his recent talks in Thailand at the International Place Branding Association, and his contributions to the Georgetown Global Cities Initiative in Washington, focusing on place management. These engagements reflect his growing influence in shaping global conversations on place management.
Joining Professor Millington the event will be prominent figures in Finnish urban planning, including Professor Heli Marjanen, Director of Urban Planning Timo Hintsanen, and Head of Planning Paula Keskikastari.
Speaking ahead of his visit, Professor Millington said:
"I am delighted to be visiting Finland for this event. Turku’s commitment to innovation and sustainability makes it an inspiring location for discussing the future of urban centres. I look forward to exchanging ideas and learning from the city’s unique approach to urban planning, which I can then bring back to Manchester and share more widely."
